Michael Vaughan could not help but to rub salt into Virat Kohli’s wounds after India’s shock elimination from the Cricket World Cup.

Two-time winners India were widely expected to reach Sunday’s final at Lord’s ahead of their semi-final showdown with New Zealand at Old Trafford.

Those expectations only increased as New Zealand, batting first, were restricted to just 239-8, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar India’s most successful bowler with three scalps.

But New Zealand came out firing with the ball and reduced India to 5-3, with prolific opener Rohit Sharma and captain Kohli both back in the shed.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja led India’s recovery with the help of the subdued MS Dhoni, but India still fell 18 runs short after being bowled out for 221 in the final over.

Vaughan wasted little time before trolling India and in particular their inspirational skipper Kohli, posting a picture of the superstar batsman holding a plane ticket on his Instagram account.

Speaking after the defeat, Kohli said: ‘The way they came out and bowled in that first half-an-hour was the difference in the game.

‘With the new ball they were outstanding with the areas that they hit. It made life very difficult.

‘I thought Jadeja had an outstanding game; the way he played today was a great sign for his skillsets and what he can do for the team.

‘It’s difficult to accept and to come to terms with but New Zealand deserve it because they put enough pressure on us and were sharper when it came to the crunch moments.’

New Zealand will face either England or Australia in Sunday’s final. The Ashes rivals meet at Edgbaston on Thursday.
